The Art School Madrid Couldn't See Coming

Join the Art School that's Rewriting the Rules

The Art School that Reinvents Art Education

An art school where the rules are drawn to be rewritten.

At the Madrid Academy of Art, we are not content to follow the traditional path; here, rules are not only learned, but also transformed .

Each student is a world, each work a revolution.

We don't just prepare you for the art world; we prepare you to lead it, to rewrite the rules with your vision.

The Madrid Academy of Art is more than an institution; it is a movement, an invitation to break the mold and create art that reflects who you really are.

Join us and be part of this new era in art education!

Learn by Doing from Technique

Here, "do what you want" has no place.

We go beyond patting yourself on the back.

We teach you the language of art, the tools you need to express what's inside you.

We will not leave you to your own devices;

we will guide you step by step, explaining how each technique can be used to tell your stories, your visions, your world.

Here, Art is not Lentils

You know "if you want to eat them, if you don't, leave them".

In many places, art education is served as a menu of the day: everyone eats the same thing, regardless of hunger or desire to experiment.

But what if your thing is not the dish of the day?

At the Madrid Academy of Art, we understand that each artist is a universe unto themselves, with their own needs, dreams, and goals.

From day one, we give you a travel plan designed exclusively for you.

We work with you hand in hand to develop your personal project, adapting the exercises and challenges as you progress and evolve.

Here, weekly reviews of your progress are not just a formality; they are an opportunity to readjust and recalibrate, ensuring that each step you take brings you closer to where you really want to be.

And if along the way your desires change, that's okay.

We change with you.

If you decide that your dream destination no longer resonates with you, we turn the rudder together toward new horizons.

Control the fundamentals, but in a big way.

I was once told,

"Anatomy? Ah, I'll teach you that in an afternoon."

Here goes none of that crap.

When we say you're going to master the fundamentals, it's because you're going to dive right into them.

It's not a superficial review;

it's a commitment to the art to the point where the basics become your best friend.

You're not just going to "master" anatomy, composition, or perspective; you're going to explore their limits and possibilities.

More Than Technique: Building Your Portfolio With You

Talking with advanced students from other schools, I noticed a common gap:

They had mastered the technique but felt lost in its personal application.

"Now what do I do with all this technique I've learned?" was the recurring question.

What they had were perfect academic drawings, but without a glimpse of what they really wanted to express .

It seems like an oxymoron, doesn't it?

Learning artistic skills without knowing how to apply them in the pursuit of your own voice.

At the Madrid Academy of Art, this question has an answer.

Here, creating your portfolio is a journey of self-discovery.

We not only teach you to perfect technique, but to ask yourself:

"What do I want to express?

What is different about my art?

We transform the learning process into an ongoing dialogue between your essence and your art, guiding you towards a portfolio that reflects your unique identity.

Your final portfolio will be more than samples of technical skill; it will be the narrative of your artistic evolution, your personal vision.

At the Madrid Academy of Art, we prepare you not only to know how to make art, but to know how to be an artist.

Freedom to Explore: Your Art, Your Way

Drawing first? Painting later?

In many schools, they make you follow a pre-set path.

Here, it's a different story.

If you feel like starting with painting, go ahead.

Each person is a world, and we believe that art is about exploring that inner world without restrictions.

Yes, focusing on drawing first can give you a solid foundation, but if you want to dive into painting from the beginning, we'll support you.

The choice is yours.

We are here to facilitate your journey, not to map it out.

One Language, A Thousand Perspectives

In the beginning, there were doubts: "An art academy in Madrid, teaching in English? How will that work?" some wondered.

Change was not long in coming: teachers from different corners of the world, students with passports full of stamps. English was not just a lingua franca; it was the bridge to an unprecedented artistic community.

Now, we look back and see: More than 75% of our students come from abroad. Madrid is not just the backdrop; it is the melting pot where cultures, ideas and dreams merge.

Magic happens when: From Australia to Canada via Japan or Qatar, each student brings a piece of the mosaic. Here, diversity is not a challenge, but the fuel that ignites our creativity.

The result: An explosion of colors, textures and visions. Internationality teaches us to look beyond the known, to explore without fear, to create without limits.

Madrid Academy of Art is not just a school; it is the meeting point where art transcends borders.

Marketing and sales

MAA Marketing and Sales

In our "Marketing and Sales" class, it's all about being practical and cutting to the chase. We dive right into what matters: the practical part. This isn't about sitting back and nodding to theories; it's about rolling up your sleeves and really understanding the inner workings of the art world.

Here's the Deal:

We approach this together, as a group. It's all about understanding the key concepts first, sure, but then we put it all into practice. We'll experiment, see what works and what doesn't, and learn from it all in real time.

Practice Makes Perfect:

Expect a lot of hands-on work. We go beyond just talking about how things should be done. I'm here to guide you, but you'll be the one doing the hard work. You'll apply what we learn directly to your own art career, step-by-step, making the moves necessary to effectively market and sell your work.

This class is about empowering you to take control, to understand the steps you need to take and actually take them. So, if you're ready to really get into the business and make waves in your art career, this is where you start.

Composition in painting

MAA Composition

In the "Composition Class," it's all about taking a deep dive into the intricacies of what makes great art work. This is not your typical Tuesday lecture. We're breaking down composition concept by concept, making sure you understand each part before moving forward. But here's the best part: it's not just talk.

This is what we do:

We take those concepts and look for them in nature-scanning through various works of art, both classical and contemporary. It's like a detective game: identifying where these compositional principles shine and where they fall short.

Group Effort, Individual Perspective:

This class thrives on group collaboration but also focuses on your individual analysis skills. You will be looking at art with a critical eye, discussing as a team and learning how to apply this knowledge to your own work.

Hands-on Learning:

Expect to really get involved with this one. It's all about applying what we learn immediately-seeing for ourselves what works, what doesn't and why. It's a class that's as practical as possible, where you're expected to not only learn the concepts but work them, inside and out.

So, get ready for a composition class that will challenge you, excite you and, most importantly, equip you with the understanding you need to elevate your craft. It's about taking those composition skills to a place where they become second nature.

Composition class

MAA On the Shoulders of Giants

In "On the Shoulders of Giants," we're stepping out of the traditional art history class and diving into the real effort behind the genius. This isn't just about dates and art schools; it's about getting into the nitty-gritty of what made the masters tick.

Here's the Breakdown:

We'll dissect the technical prowess of legendary painters, uncovering the sweat and tears behind their masterpieces. It's about grounding the myths, looking beyond the canvas to the real challenges and breakthroughs these artists faced.

The Real Work Behind the Masterpieces:

Expect to dive deep into the frustrations, the environment and the sheer determination it took for these giants to redefine their art. We're breaking down the myths to see the work and innovation it took to push boundaries and make a mark on the art world.

Influence and Evolution:

We will explore how these artists influenced each other, what techniques were passed on and how they evolved. It is about understanding the dynamic web of inspiration, competition and collaboration that fueled their creativity.

Technical Comparisons:

Be prepared for side-by-side comparisons that highlight the technical differences and similarities between the masters. It's a practical look at what worked, what didn't, and how certain techniques led to breakthroughs or setbacks.

This class is a journey through the trials and triumphs of the art's greatest figures, designed to inspire and challenge you. It is about appreciating giants not just for their final works, but for the journey they took to achieve greatness. Ready to stand on the shoulders of giants and see beyond?

find your style

MAA Find Your Style

"Find Your Style" is an innovative journey that combines individual exploration with collective discovery. This unique class encourages you to dive deep into various aspects of your identity, not only as an artist but as a multifaceted individual. Through personal reflection and creative expression, you will collect images, styles, quotes and anything else that resonates with your essence.

Here's How It Works:

Individually, you'll embark on a quest to piece together your personal mosaic-what ignites your passion, defines your aesthetic, and makes you you. This is not limited to art; it's about discovering your core in different spheres of life.

Group Dynamics:

But there's a twist-the journey doesn't stay solo. You'll share your findings and, in turn, explore your peers' panels. It's a window into diverse perspectives, offering the opportunity to articulate your discoveries and witness the vast spectrum of inspiration within your group.

The Objective:

The goal is twofold: to gain clarity about who you are and what drives you, and to see how these revelations can enrich your artistic practice. This class is as much about self-discovery as it is about recognizing the potential of weaving the insights of others into your creative fabric.

The Outcome:

"Find Yourself" promises a deeply enriching experience, allowing you to not only introspect but also appreciate the diversity and richness of perspectives around you. It is about finding your voice while recognizing the harmony in diversity, potentially incorporating new inspirations into your work.

This class is your opportunity to find and redefine yourself, pushing the boundaries of your creative identity with the support and inspiration of your peers.

MAA Mastering Anatomy

The "Mastering Anatomy" class elevates the study of the human body to an unprecedented level. This is not just a course; it's a deep dive into the very framework of the human form-bones, muscles, and how they interconnect to facilitate movement.

This is what you will experience:

You'll move beyond mere theory to hands-on, practical learning. By examining various models, you'll trace muscle lines and insertion points on the body. This exploration is not just about observation; it's about understanding the dynamic nature of human anatomy.

Practical Application:

As you identify and map these anatomical features, you will gain insights into what makes movement possible, what works and what doesn't. The goal is to see the body in motion, to understand how anatomical elements move and change in real time.

Beyond Observation:

The real magic of this class lies in its ability to transform how you create. With a deep understanding of anatomy, you will find yourself able to draw from memory, capturing the essence of human movement and form without the need to copy directly from a model.

This class is about unlocking a new level of skill and confidence in your artistic practice. It's about giving you the tools to not only replicate what you see, but to infuse your work with a deep understanding of the intricate dance of bones and muscles of the human body.

MAA Art in Motion

"Art in Motion" takes you on an extraordinary journey into the world of dynamic art making, housed within the vibrant energy of a professional dance studio neighboring the Academy. This hands-on class is dedicated to mastering the art of capturing movement and gesture through quick, expressive sketches.

Here is the Essence:

In this class, we get into the rhythm and flow of dancers in action, learning to distill and capture the essence of movement on paper. It's about honing your ability to simplify what you see, identifying what's crucial in a pose or movement, and translating that into quick, evocative sketches.

Dynamic Composition:

As you observe multiple dancers moving simultaneously, you'll face the exciting challenge of composing scenes with multiple figures in motion. This exercise is not just about capturing a single moment, but weaving together a tapestry of movement, energy and emotion.

Beyond the Surface:

"Art in Motion" also delves deeper, reflecting on the dedication, hard work and sometimes pain that dancers endure in their pursuit of excellence. This perspective enriches your artistic practice, bringing a greater appreciation for the subjects you draw and the stories they tell.

Rhythm and Strength:

Visiting the dance studio, we immerse ourselves in the world of the dancers, absorbing the rhythm, strength and sheer power of their performances. This experience transforms not only how we see movement but how we perceive and represent life and energy in art.

"Art in Motion" is more than a drawing class; it is a celebration of movement, an exploration of human resilience and grace, and a lesson in capturing fleeting moments with boldness and sensitivity. Join us to explore the dynamic intersection of visual art and dance, where each sketch tells a story of movement, emotion and devotion.

Classical technique, YES

but from a modern teaching approach

Redefining Art Education: A Modern Approach for Diverse Mindsets

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to train at a variety of art schools, many of which pride themselves on following the teaching methods of the great masters of the past. At first glance, this may seem like a hallmark of authenticity and excellence.

However, after reflecting on advances in our understanding of learning and neuroscience, it becomes clear that what worked in the past does not necessarily meet the needs of all students today.

Is it Time to Evolve in Art Education?

Why should we cling to a single teaching method when there are multiple ways to explore and transmit artistic techniques?

Doesn't art pedagogy deserve an overhaul that allows each student to make the most of his or her potential, respecting the uniqueness of his or her cognitive and creative processes?

Academy of art in motion

Beyond Tradition: Learning Tailored to Each Student

At the Madrid Academy of Art, we recognize that while traditional drawing, painting and sculpture techniques are fundamental, the pedagogical approach must evolve.

Art education cannot be monolithic.

We live in an era that celebrates diversity of thought, multiple intelligences, and the understanding that each brain processes reality uniquely.

It is crucial that our approach to teaching reflects these truths.

Pedagogical Innovation: Aligned with the Science of Learning

We draw on the latest discoveries about how we learn and how our brains work to design a curriculum that is truly inclusive and effective.

Rather than insisting on old methods that may not serve all students, we employ strategies that embrace different learning and cognitive processing styles.

This not only makes our teaching more accessible, but also allows students to maximize their creative potential.

The Art of Teaching Art: Personalized and Contemporary

We understand that true mastery in teaching art lies in the ability to adapt to each student, recognizing and nurturing their unique strengths.

This philosophy translates into an educational experience that is both deeply personal and expansively creative.

Here, each artist finds their own path, supported by a pedagogical approach that is as diverse and dynamic as they are themselves.

The Madrid Academy of Art stands out for its commitment to a forward-looking art education, respecting tradition but always ready to question, adapt and evolve the way it is taught.

Our goal is not only to train technically proficient artists, but creative individuals who are equipped to explore, innovate and contribute to the art world in ways we have yet to discover.

Breaking Molds, Not Spirits

The Collaborative Revolution: Innovation VS Competition

Farewell to TOXIC Competition: Forging Unique Pathways at the Madrid Academy of Art

Browsing through stories shared on platforms like CUORA, it's easy to come across narratives that paint a rather bleak picture of traditional art education. In many schools, competitiveness reaches extreme levels, fostering an environment where pressure to excel becomes the norm. Lack of personal space and constant comparison can, unfortunately, trigger a hostile environment, stifling students' creativity and well-being.

However, at the Madrid Academy of Art (MAA), we pride ourselves on cultivating a radically different atmosphere. Here, we ask ourselves:

Why should such toxic competitiveness exist when each artist is unique, with their own path to travel?

Sculpture 3

Uniqueness as a Standard

At MAA, we recognize and celebrate that every student brings with them a distinct set of aspirations, influences, and dreams.

In a world where everyone followed the same path, measuring who is ahead and who is behind might seem intuitive.

But this is not our reality.

Here, each artist charts his or her own path, pursuing goals that are

intrinsically personal and, therefore, incomparable,

incomparable.

This philosophy eradicates the foundation on which negative competitiveness is built, replacing it with an environment of mutual support.

Collaboration over Competition

By focusing on individual development and allowing each student to explore their personal projects, the sense of direct competition is eliminated.

How can there be a first or a last when everyone advances according to their own creative compass?

At MAA, we foster a spirit of collaboration where one's success is seen as an inspiration, not a threat.

A Space for Every Voice

Part of our formula for minimizing toxic competition lies in ensuring that each student has the physical and emotional space needed to develop.

This approach not only reduces friction but also promotes greater personal and creative expression.

By having the area to experiment and fail without judgment, our artists can truly explore the extent of their potential.

The Madrid Academy of Art is distinguished not only by what we teach, but by how we teach it.

By prioritizing individual paths over a uniform march (lentils for all), we dismantle destructive competitiveness and build a community where each artist can flourish on his or her own terms.

Here, art and identity intertwine in a constant dance of personal growth and discovery.

More Than Words: Visual Strategies for Visual Thinkers

We realized that some of our brightest students can lose the plot if we only communicate verbally.

So we changed the script.

We use hands-on demonstrations and explore a variety of media - drawing, painting, sculpture, videos, photos - to really connect.

This approach allows those who think in images to expand their understanding of art from an already solid foundation.

Artistic Identity: You Are the Creator

Our Find Yourself workshops and Portfolio Creation programs are platforms for students to explore who they are through art.

By creating notebooks of styles, colors and patterns, each student learns to recognize and value their unique voice.

It is an exercise in hands-on visual self-reflection, not an endless internal monologue.

"I would recommend the program, but not to everyone. Because I think it's a lot of work, a lot of time and it's also money.I would only recommend it to people who are passionate about something. Because otherwise it's wasting, if you go with the intention of spending time, well, you have a lot of other places to do it..."

"There are people who have so much fun that they don't want someone else involved in that process. Because in the end, if you let someone else guide you, sometimes it's not fun. It's not, 'How beautiful this painting turned out!' That process is also a lot of suffering and not everybody would be willing..."

"I wouldn't recommend it to anyone because you really have to like figuration, portraiture, everything that is human and be willing to be taught. There are people who don't pay attention. They're people who don't like the human figure, for example, and prefer to combine colors in a landscape, they have fun with it and they're not interested in anything else..."

"They teach you a lot to focus on a goal. To break your limits, to have patience, to have humility to learn from others, so that others can teach you. And all these are fundamental personal qualities in life. Very satisfying for me on a personal level, to have finally found this place to fully develop myself..."

"There is a clear methodology. They know where you want to get to. They know how to guide you there. It's very personalized and that's always appreciated. It's not a typical academy where they teach you four things and have a group level. They care about you, personally, so that you reach the level of perfection that you are looking for and that you need..."

"The self-taught option is viable depending a little bit on your way of being. I think if you are demanding with yourself it is a good tool. It's just that all human beings tend toward the comfortable. I myself, for example, was kind of beating myself up. I started with painting, I realized I wasn't going that way. I went back and took up drawing again. I went back a lot more, until I started from the beginning, because I understood that it was a process that started from a place and you couldn't start halfway..."

"I'm sure it's harder because you're going to make a lot more mistakes and it's going to take you longer to specify a direction and a path, and you're going to waste time and you're probably going to get somewhere, but you're going to get there later and more tired. The MAA program is much more straightforward than anything else I can find rightnow..."

"To a certain extent. When you find a limit. Like the conversation I had with the professor the other day. He said to me, 'I see you're reaching a limit and you say, well, this is it, and what I do is push you further, against that limit so you cross it.' I think you need somebody to do it, you're not going to do it. When you're taught what's logical, what the path is, you know it's there..."

IMG-20230520-WA0010

"(OTHER ACADEMIES) At the painting level, it was based on copying photographs, one after another. It also limited your own creativity. Because it gave me the feeling that they taught you to fly, but without ever taking off, always on the runway. So I wanted to take off. When do we take off? When do you teach me to develop my creativity, my imagination, to do something without limits? If I imagine a scene of a certain place, through a composition, I can do it. Whether it's through knowledge of anatomy, drawing itself, even models, sculpture, anything that doesn't limit you. It always seemed very strange to me..."

"It's a lot of money and obviously not everyone can afford it. And I feel quite privileged to be able to afford it so I can maintain a normal life, no luxuries, but normal. And it's not expensive. The service as such, the new facilities, the hours you can have a day with a model, if you attend in the morning and in the afternoon.... You can't find that anywhere else. You can find similar things, but not all in one place, it's not expensive, I think it's very good..."

"I like that the teachers comment, not only what is done in the academy, but what they do outside, the paintings they do personally, the processes... that they talk to you beyond the drawings and paintings, that they talk to you about life as artists, how they see it. It's super interesting because they are now blazing a trail and it gives you clues about how you can do it in the future..."

IMG_0382

"I know people who also like art, obviously friends of mine, but I don't think it would work for everyone. It all depends on how you approach art. There are people who just like art as a way to blow off steam or relax. A friend of mine, for example, says to me, "I really like to paint because I relax a lot." And I say, "And how do you relax?" (laughing)... "but it's a pain" (still laughing) "I don't understand this part, review it, do it again..."

"I would recommend it to someone who is very clear that they want to dedicate themselves to this, to be an artist, painter, sculptor... and to people in Fine Arts who like the technique..."

"I need to work to pay for this and besides taking a lot of time from where I can to be able to come. And dedicating all that time to this is not easy. Since I have a personal situation where I don't have children, that makes it easier for me to be able to dedicate time to this..."

"I like one thing about the school that I haven't encountered before. Having a clear methodology. Because what I've found so far is spending a lot of time on an activity where you don't notice that you're progressing. You can be there for years and years and you don't progress. I've met people who have spent more than 20 years painting photographs and at the end they don't know how to do anything else. It doesn't lead anywhere..."

"I like the communication with the teacher. I think they adapt well to the student. Not just to their level, but how they address the student. From my experience, they come in, they go well with what they tell you. I get home and I hear the teacher in my head repeating technical aspects back to me. And I think that happens because they do it well. Because they're very flexible. Because they don't treat every student the same. Which is what's been happening to me all my life. And here they go at your own pace. There's work and support here..."

"The time you dedicate is to achieve a goal that they are clear about. And if you've met it and you've done well, because they're very demanding, it opens a door to the next phase. Then you see that you're moving towards something..."

"Due to my self-demanding way of being, I went in search of some of that knowledge that I was missing and I dedicated time to it. What happens? That one is aware that when you dedicate time to something concrete, there are things you like more than others and I lacked that discipline and left things aside. It was easier to draw images while watching television because it is less tiring, on the one hand, it has its advantages, but on the other, its disadvantages..."

"Normally in other academies they don't give drawing the importance it deserves. Generally speaking, I have found training centers where people went more to meet other people, to hang out, to develop that hobby, to do something successful, beautiful, that they could show to their friends. But they didn't have that restlessness or that hunger to perfect themselves, these academies were more focused on not frustrating people too much and not losing additional income..."

"It depends on how expensive it is for you, indeed it is expensive, but if you really have a dream.... how expensive is it to fulfill it? For example, there are people who pay a lot of money for a house that is not going to give them as much satisfaction as the time one spends here drawing, painting, sculpting, it depends on your preference, on what makes you happy..."

"At the academy where I was, I talked to them about bringing models to work from real life. And they told me that if they started bringing models to paint from life, the students would get frustrated, they wouldn't want to continue and they would want to leave..."

"It requires you to have some savings, to have an economic cushion, even if you need to quit your job for a while to be able to support yourself with those savings. But it's worth it. It's worth it because it's not money wasted by the academy. Because they do care about the training of the people, about the teachers they bring, about the facilities, it's serious and you have to pay for professionalism..."

What really makes a good art academy?

A good art academy will know you like a grandfather knows his favorite grandson. They will carefully evaluate your current level and then design the most effective plan for you to become the best artist before you know it. Part of their plan should include regular reviews to make sure you are progressing at the perfect pace and getting the results you want.

We do all of that but unlike other academies, the MAA team doesn't just focus on maintaining that perfect balance. Our goal is to challenge you, we will push you until you reach your limits and then push you some more to break that limit. We don't allow you to settle for anything less than the best.
