IS IT EXPENSIVE TO LIVE IN MADRID?

In general terms, living in Madrid is considered to be cheaper than in other major cities such as London, Paris or New York.

Everyday items are affordable, with a loaf of bread costing less than one euro and a bottle of wine between 3 and 4 euros. On average, you can shop for a week’s worth of food for less than 100 euros. One thing to keep in mind is that there is a big “going out” culture in Madrid, so you may eat out more than you anticipate.

We are in the habit of eating lavishly, and many restaurants outside the tourist hotspots offer special deals for as little as 10-12 euros, often including a glass of wine, a large starter, a main course, dessert and coffee.

Tapas can cost as little as 3-4 € and a beer will cost the same. It’s also worth noting that many bars will give you tapas when you order drinks so you don’t pay directly for the food (amazing, right?).

Madrid is considered one of the most expensive places in Spain in terms of housing. Given the population density of the city, living in an apartment or sharing a room is common. A one-bedroom apartment outside the city center can cost as little as €550 a month in certain areas. However, as with any major city, the more fashionable the area is or the closer to the center, the more expensive it will be, around 900 and 1200 € per month.

Public transportation is very affordable and efficient, and gets you almost anywhere in the city with ease. A single trip by metro or bus will cost €1.50. However, there are alternatives such as a 10-trip ticket (€12) or a monthly transport card (available for residents of Madrid) that will cost €20 per month for students and up to €54 per month for non-concessions. These cards offer unlimited metro/bus travel. Here you will find updated information about the public transport service.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO LIVE IN MADRID?

Living in Madrid is living in a sprawling, modern city with the history and Latin charm you’d expect from the Spanish capital.

The people, known locally as madrileños, are welcoming and open. Madrid is home to beautiful boulevards and classical architecture, as well as many cultural and social attractions.

The climate is pleasant, especially in summer, with an average temperature of 25ºC. However, you will need a coat, as the average temperature can drop as low as 6°C in the winter.

Madrid is an excellent place if you are looking for all the fun and bustle of a big city, without the hectic pace of other big cities. Spain is the home of the siesta after all!

Although the traditional siesta is very different, especially in big cities like Madrid, the value placed on time spent with loved ones is still very much ingrained. In Madrid, people work hard and have a lot of fun, so expect to spend late nights laughing, eating and drinking with friends on a regular basis.
